Het Stedelijk Museum en TrouwAmsterdam presenteren met veel genoegen Augment It! Dit bijzondere programma in het gebouw van TrouwAmsterdam is gewijd aan alle mogelijke vormen van Augmented Reality (AR) waar beeldend kunstenaars, dichters, architecten en designers op dit moment mee experimenteren. Met een uitgebreide AR-tentoonstelling in De Verdieping, lezingen in de clubzaal, AR-performances door het hele gebouw en een spetterende afsluiting met een Augmented Reality DJ, biedt Augment It! een veelzijdige presentatie van de mogelijkheden van AR vandaag de dag!

Augmented Reality (AR) draait om het toevoegen van digitale virtuele beelden aan de werkelijkheid. Op zoek naar de seamless interface tussen mens, machine en de werkelijkheid wordt er hard gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van AR via onder meer speciale brillen, smartphones of de webcam. Maar wat zijn de nieuwste trends? Wat kunnen dichters met het nieuwe medium? En hoe ziet AR VJ-ing eruit? Hoe verhoudt het menselijk lichaam zich tot deze virtuele realiteit? Op deze en vele andere vragen krijg je antwoord tijdens Augment it!

Het middag- en avondprogramma van Augment It! bestaat uit de volgende onderdelen:

Augmented Poetry (16.00 – 18.00 uur)

De presentatie van de nieuwste editie ‘Poëzie op het scherm’, waarin zes teams van dichters en vormgevers zich hebben toegespitst op mobiele schermen (smartphones, tablets etc.) en experimenteren met onder meer AR. Met andere woorden: de eerste AR-poëzie ter wereld!

Met: Arnoud van Adrichem, Ines Cox en Lauren Grusenmeyer; Wim Brands en Max Kisman; Maarten Doorman, P.J. Roggeband en Nils Muhlenbruch; Hélène Gelèns en Luis Angel Rodil Fernandez; Saskia de Jong en Rens van Meegen en Elmar Kuiper en Selby Gildemacher.

Presentatie en discussie: Rita Raley (University of California Santa Barbara, USA; en samensteller van de Electronic Literature Collection Vol 2) en Margriet Schavemaker (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam).

In het kader van het avondprogramma van Augment It! is vanaf 21.00 op het balkon boven de bar een meet & greet met de makers van ‘Poëzie op het scherm’.

Augmented Art

De gehele Verdieping is gevuld met een marker-based AR tentoonstelling samengesteld door AR kunstenaar en gastcurator Sander Veenhof. De tentoonstelling bestaat uit een internationale selectie van de meest toonaangevende AR werken van dit moment.

Met o.a.: Will Pappenheimer, Mark Skwarek, James Alliban, Tamiko Thiel, Viktor Baltus.

Augmented Body

Op diverse plekken in het gebouw van TrouwAmsterdam zullen performances en installaties plaatsvinden waarin het menselijke lichaam de interface of het navigatiepunt wordt van een toegevoegde realiteit of de augmented data waardoor we worden omgeven.

Met o.a.: Karen Lancel/Hermen Maat, Bram Snijders en Jeremy Bailey.

Augmented DJ

De avond wordt afgesloten met een spectaculaire augmented reality DJ act gerealiseerd door Resolume.

Augment It yourself!

In Augmented Reality vervaagt de grens tussen toeschouwer, kunstenaar en curator. Iets toe te voegen aan de expositie? Zet een afbeelding van je werk op je smartphone en plaats het tijdens de avond (of vooraf) op bijgevoegde marker met behulp van de gratis ‘Stiktu’ app. Maak je virtuele 3D-sculpturen? Geef ons een seintje als je iets neer hebt gezet, via GPS-coördinaat 52.35451699670258, 4.9129486083984375.

Augmented lezingen

Naast het bovenstaande programma zijn er diverse lezingen en debatten waarin de voor- en nadelen van AR worden onderzocht. Wordt de wereld mooier door AR? Is AR een tijdelijke bevlieging of het begin van de seamless interface tussen mens, machine en werkelijkheid, waar we sinds lange tijd van dromen? Hoe kunnen instellingen als het Stedelijk en TrouwAmsterdam zich op dit terrein innoveren?

Augment it! is de nieuwste editie van de inmiddels legendarische reeks Do It!-avonden die het Stedelijk organiseert rond hedendaagse interactieve vormen van kunst en design, en is onderdeel van de succesvolle serie Stedelijk @ Trouw/De Verdieping. Het Augment It!-programma is een samenwerkingsproject van het Stedelijk Museum, TrouwAmsterdam, ‘Poëzie op het Scherm’ (een project van het Nederlands Letterenfonds en het Mondriaan Fonds), gastcurator Sander Veenhof en het Stedelijk ARtours project (mogelijk gemaakt door het Fonds Innovatie Cultuuruitingen). Augment It! is mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Virtueel Platform.

Poëzie op het scherm wordt georganiseerd door het Nederlands Letterenfonds en het Mondriaan Fonds. Dichters en vormgevers ‘in de nieuwe media’ krijgen de gelegenheid om samen een literair werk voor op het (beeld)scherm te maken en presenteren. De editie van dit jaar is toegespitst op mobiele schermen. Met ‘Poëzie op het scherm’ stimuleren de fondsen artistiek-inhoudelijke experimenten tussen beide disciplines.

Sander Veenhof (1973) studeerde Computer Science aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam en studeerde in 2009 af aan de Rietveld Academie op het onderwerp ‘instabiele media’. Zijn kunstenaarspraktijk beweegt zich tussen onderzoek en recente technologische vernieuwingen en is gericht op de presentatie van nieuwe projecten in een culturele context.

BUILDING BLOCKS
Tijdens de Haarlemse Lente presenteert Horizonverticaal de tentoonstelling Building Blocks met als thema architectuur in de hedendaagse kunst. Participerende kunstenaars zijn Marin de Jong, Karien Mientjes en Jeroen Molenaar.

Viktor Baltus maakte speciaal voor deze tentoonstelling een werk in de stad die via een Augmented reality (AR) App te zien zal zijn! Speciale opening van Baltus’ virtuele sculptuur is om 20:00 boven het Spaarne aan de Houtmarkt!

Haarlemse Lente heeft ten doel de kwaliteit en de diversiteit van de Haarlemse kunstscène onder de aandacht van het landelijke kunstpubliek brengen. Daarnaast willen de deelnemers duidelijk maken dat in klassieke schildersstad Haarlem de oude en hedendaagse kunst uitstekend met elkaar samengaan – en elkaar versterken.

From February till the end of April of 2012, a new project by visual artists Viktor Baltus and Thijs Zweers will be presented in Berlin.

Baltus and Zweers both graduated from the Art Academy in Arnhem (NL) and have a fascination with perception. Reason enough to devote their latest project in 2012 to one of the newest forms of perception, the Augmented Reality. In plain words: an added layer on the live camera image of a Smartphone. With the help of a computer program, an image of for example 20 x 30 meters high is set on a GPS location which can only been seen through a Smartphone. It gives the illusion that the digital image hovers in real open space. Berlin, a city with opportunities for new developments and a fast growing high artistic level, empty walls and modern architecture is the perfect stage for added reality.

THIJS ZWEERS (NL) 1986

Thijs Zweers graduated from the ArtEZ art academy (Arnhem, The Netherlands) in 2010. Since then he has focused on a very peculiar translation of digital imagery to detailed graphite drawings. This almost anachronistic act brings about intriguing images of a reality that Zweers finds to be autonomous. While the digital world is a product of mankind, the individual now has little to no influence on its workings. He or she is subject to the laws and outward appearance of this alternate reality.

The graphite drawings themselves look like elaborate studies by an internet-biologist. Supposing that everything put online stays online – and that everything online is connected to everything – one can see the digital world as an autonomous biotope. A domain in which a continual dialectic process creates a whole the individual ‘user’ only catches glimpses of.

Zweers’ impressions of these weightless images historicize the digital world that is so difficult to catch in time.

VIKTOR BALTUS (NL) 1982

Viktor Baltus’ work is based on his fascination with perception. Captivated by the variability of perception, his work is an investigation of the relationship between perceiver and perceived phenomenon or object. “We have a relative conception of colour. Lighted in a certain way, a green dike can come across as almost blue. Moreover, it is often the case that there is a huge difference between what we think we see, and what is actually there to be seen.”

Even though Baltus is an experienced perceiver, he is conscious of the subjectivity of his perception. Still, he claims to be in search of a certain form of objectivity. Even if it is his perception that is portrayed in a painting, it is presented without passing judgment or giving an interpretation. This fascination with perception isn’t limited to the perception of colors. Baltus is continuously trying to discover remarkable shapes and forms. His paintings are rarely found on flat surfaces, but are hidden in the cavities of wooden bowls, on dishes, broken bench seats, small or large tondos, cigar-boxes, etc. These ‘found objects’ are what give his work its characteristic object-status. In it, form and depiction alternate at taking the lead.

The work of Viktor Baltus is highly visual. With a gaze, bordering at being analytical, he scrutinizes colour, surface, dimension, light, form and their interaction. Narrative content is avoided to the greatest extent possible. Despite his quest for objectivity his work is all but formal. The amazement granted by his act of perception can be felt in each separate piece.

Augmented Reality Exhibition.

The Hondsbossche Zeewering is a 5.5 km long dike near Petten in the Netherlands. This dike, where a flood in the Middle Ages broke thru the original dunes, is replaced with a tight asphalt shore along which are 39 dams. Throughout the month October 2011, at the end of 20 of these dams will be a augmented reality work of Viktor Baltus. Only viewable through the Smart Phone and the App of Layar.
